Frequently asked questions

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF AN EVALUATION?

The goal of the evaluation is to provide an in-depth understanding of your child’s functional strengths and weaknesses in order to provide practical recommendations for short-term and long-term treatment planning.

WHAT DOES AN EVALUATION INVOLVE?

The evaluation is three-parts: A parent meeting, the full day, in-person formal neuropsychological testing, and a feedback meeting to review the evaluation results and targeted recommendations.

On the evaluation day, Dr. Yates will work directly with your child to examine your child’s thinking skills and behavior. The evaluation uses standardized tests. Test may be performed using paper and pencil or may be on the computer. Your child will be asked many questions and asked to solve different types of puzzles and problems. The evaluation typically includes tests that measure the following:

  • Intelligence

  • Language

  • Visual-spatial skills

  • Attention

  • Processing speed

  • Executive functioning

  • Academic skills

  • Mood and personality

Following the evaluation, Dr. Yates will consult with your child’s teachers and other relevant professionals to learn more about your child in their natural settings. She will review your child’s medical and school records to help understand how the evaluation results relate to daily life.

At the conclusion of the evaluation, Dr. Yates will meet with you to review the test findings and discuss the implications and recommendations of the evaluation based on your child’s unique profile. You will then receive a comprehensive written report.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD WOULD BENEFIT FROM AN EVALUATION?

Common reasons for seeking an assessment include your child is having difficulty meeting developmental milestones, is showing attention or behavioral issues, is experiencing learning problems, or is demonstrating social differences. If diagnostic clarification is needed for treatment recommendation, a neuropsychological evaluation would also be beneficial.

If the child has an underlying genetic or medical condition or experienced a brain-related medical event, a neuropsychological evaluation may also be warranted.

HOW CAN AN EVALUATION HELP?

A neuropsychological evaluation helps to:

  • Make or confirm a diagnosis

  • Understand the child’s unique learning pattern and how they learn best

  • Clarify why the child may be struggling in school, mastering skills, or underperforming on homework or exams

  • Document the child’s cognitive development over time

  • Provide a baseline of functioning prior to a specific treatment or document a change in the child’s skills after a given treatment
